Routine examinations and general check-ups
Dental check-ups are routine examinations performed by our dentists and dental hygiene therapists at regular intervals, aimed at ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy. You should see our dentist or dental hygiene therapist regularly (normally once every six to twelve months) to spot any problems early, such as dental decay or gum disease. Our check-ups also include routine screening for oral cancers and onward referral to specialist services if necessary.
Oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease are preventable, and an early diagnosis of oral cancer greatly improves the chances of successful treatment, so regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining both your oral health and your overall health. Our Patient Plans include regular examinations each year with a dentist and two dental hygiene appointments (scale and polish) with a therapist.
At your first appointment our dentist will advise on any treatment plan required and explain options most suitable for you. Our dental hygiene therapist will outline the many things you can do to take good care of your oral health between appointments. Visit our Patient Hub for everything you need to know, including how to self-check for anything unusual that might require urgent attention.
X-rays
Dental x-rays, also called radiographs, are images taken with low levels of radiation. They capture pictures of the inside of your teeth and gums, helping your dentist to assess your oral health and identify any issues such as tooth decay. The radiation level is very low and therefore x-rays are considered safe for both adults and children.
Early tooth decay does not tend to show many physical signs. Sometimes the tooth looks healthy, but our dental team will be able to see from an x-ray whether you have any decay under the enamel, any possible infections in the root, or any bone loss around the tooth. They can then discuss treatment options with you and proceed with the best course of action.
Please be aware that we will require a deposit when you book an appointment (50% deposit when booking a New Adult Patient or Adult Check-up appointment) – this will be deducted from your bill for the relevant treatment at your next visit. We understand that things sometimes come up, so your deposit will not be affected if you alter your appointment with over 24 hours’ notice. We will always be as flexible as possible with you but reserve the right to retain your deposit in case of late cancellations (any cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice) or late arrivals which result in us not being able to see you (for example, arriving c:15 minutes late for a 20-30 minute appointment).
It is very difficult for us to offer care to other patients if little notice is given. Loss of opportunity to treat patients in need increases the waiting times for appointments and the cost to run the surgery. We will always try to be sensitive to personal circumstances in the event of late cancellations.
If you register for our Patient Plan you’ll get 10% discount on routine dental treatments.
