Transforming this wonderful and much-loved former grammar school in Bodmin into a brand-new, purpose-designed and fully accessible dental centre was always an ambitious vision but thanks to the skill, hard work and commitment of our team and a range of local contractors, we’re there!
It was all smiles on Thursday 16th May as we celebrated the important stage of handing over the building to Smile Together so that we can now make the finishing touches before opening to patients towards the end of the month.
Our journey began with purchasing the site and then the initial and very important stage of consulting with our patients to make sure they would be in support of centralising dental provision in this part of the county into a purpose-designed dental centre. Thanks to local market research specialists PFA Research for undertaking this work on our behalf. Our patients’ overwhelming endorsement of our plans meant we also therefore had the support of our commissioners NHS England to proceed.
It’s taken some considerable skill, determination and commitment to bring this neglected building back into purposeful use, but with help from M&E Building Services Consulting Engineers Hulley Kirkwood, SMT Associates Chartered Building Surveyors, Mace Green Consulting, Alan Leather Architects, Health & Safety Associates, interior design specialists 3iDog, Decadent Ltd and Cornish building contractors Bradys it is going to help transform dentistry in Cornwall. Our thanks to everyone involved, plus Decadent Ltd for fitting out the surgeries and of course our amazingly dedicated team whose hard work behind the scenes meant we have kept almost to time and budget, and had a successful registration visit from CQC meaning we’re approved to welcome patients by the end of May.
We thought it was important for the local community to have the first opportunity to look around Harleigh Road and see how we’ve transformed the building, especially as so many of those we’ve met went to school there! So our community open day takes place on Saturday 18th May from 11-3 where our team will be on hand to chat to visitors, give tours of the new dental centre and talk about our work which, as an employee-owned social enterprise, sees us delivering dentistry with social impact across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly creating healthier happier communities.
