Examinations, check ups & x-rays

Regular dental check-ups and X-rays to keep your oral health in top condition.

Overview

Examinations, Check-ups & X-Rays

Dental check-ups are routine examinations performed by our dentists and dental hygiene therapists at regular intervals, aimed at ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy. You should see our dentist or dental hygiene therapist regularly (normally once every six to twelve months) to spot any problems early, such as dental decay or gum disease. Our check-ups also include routine screening for oral cancers and onward referral to specialist services if necessary.

Oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease are preventable, and an early diagnosis of oral cancer greatly improves the chances of successful treatment, so regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining both your oral health and your overall health.

At your first appointment our dentist will advise on any treatment plan required and explain options most suitable for you. Our dental hygiene therapist will outline the many things you can do to take good care of your oral health between appointments. Visit our Patient Hub for everything you need to know, including how to self-check for anything unusual that might require urgent attention.

X-rays

Dental x-rays, also called radiographs, are images taken with low levels of radiation. They capture pictures of the inside of your teeth and gums, helping your dentist to assess your oral health and identify any issues such as tooth decay. The radiation level is very low and therefore x-rays are considered safe for both adults and children.

Early tooth decay does not tend to show many physical signs. Sometimes the tooth looks healthy, but our dental team will be able to see from an x-ray whether you have any decay under the enamel, any possible infections in the root, or any bone loss around the tooth. They can then discuss treatment options with you and proceed with the best course of action.

Booking an appointment

We understand that unexpected situations can arise, so your deposit will not be affected if you change your appointment with more than 24 hours’ notice. While we aim to be as flexible as possible, we reserve the right to retain your deposit for late cancellations or late arrivals that prevent us from seeing you. Short-notice cancellations make it difficult for us to offer care to other patients, increase waiting times, and raise the cost of running the surgery. We will, however, always consider personal circumstances.
