Head of HR
Head of HR
Within Smile Together Dental CIC we have a number of services such as West Country Dental Care and Brighter Dental, Smile Together Commercial, and community initiatives including Brighter Smiles, Cornwall’s oral health campaign. As Head of HR I am responsible for providing all the recruitment, human resources, training and development support relating to the individuals we employ within each of these areas right across the country and including on the Isles of Scilly, so it’s a particularly dynamic environment to work in!
Smile Together is committed to investing in the professional and personal development of its clinical and professional support team members. We have developed a bespoke Training Academy that enables us to meet our compliance and other training requirements and as a business we like to celebrate everyone’s success.
We launched as an employee-owned community interest company in 2016 so organisational and cultural change remains a significant area of focus for our business as we seek to genuinely engage with our employees.
As an HR professional it’s important for me to be able to support the company and its workforce through these developments, so in 2018 I successfully embarked upon a Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) Level 5 qualification. This has enabled me to have a more strategic ‘helicopter view’ of all aspects of the business and provide guidance, support and strategic direction to the board, the company, its managers and workforce, and enjoy my role even more than I did before.
The most fun aspect of my role is working with such an amazing team of people who are so very committed to making a genuine difference here In Cornwall, but my biggest challenge is keeping on top of the workload.
My early career saw me undertake a variety of different customer service and administration roles until I joined leading South West law firm Bond Pearce where I provided administrative support to the partnership for over 20 years, including PA to the senior partner and secretarial supervisor. The development of strong people management skills in these roles were critical, particularly as the firm expanded both geographically and in terms of its workforce, and I soon found myself leading on recruitment processes, including for trainee solicitors through to highly qualified team members.
Upon leaving Bond Pearce in 2007 I became PA to the clinical director of Cornwall’s community dental service and again over time found myself moving into a wider operations and corporate support roles which included assuming responsibility for HR matters which I thoroughly enjoyed. So it made perfect sense, when the organisation transitioned into Smile Together as an independent employee-owned social enterprise, that I undertake my CIPD Level 5 qualification to formalise all this experience and become Head of HR!
I am very family and friends orientated and outside of work I enjoy dog walking, playing pool, socialising and helping my husband make finishing touches to the house we have been building over the last couple of years.
