We are delighted to welcome our two latest dental nurse apprentices to the team – Ty Norris from Launceston will be working in our Harleigh Road Dental Centre, Bodmin and Corey Wedlake from Helston joins our team at The Lescudjack Centre in Penzance.
For Cornish girl Ty dental nursing is an ideal occupation: “I initially considered training as a paramedic but didn’t want to go away to University. So I began researching other opportunities and dental nursing really stood out. This opportunity with Smile Together will enable me to work, study and progress alongside my other passion in life which is my horses!”
Corey was born in Cornwall and at age 3 moved with his family to the United States, returning to Cornwall when he was 13. He has two younger sisters, both of whom are also trainee dental nurses working locally. As he explains: “Not only have my sisters inspired me to progress with a dental nursing career but, as a retained fire fighter, I have this deep desire to help others. Training and ultimately qualifying with Smile Together, where everything they do is about supporting the local community here in Cornwall, I can now balance all of this whilst progressing my career.”
Ty and Corey have a tough act to follow given the outstanding success of our very first apprentice dental nurses, Thai Bachelor and Tanisha Doig, who remained with Smile Together upon qualification and are now looking forward to supporting Ty and Corey.
Alongside Thai, Tanisha was one of two dental nurse apprentices to join Smile Together back in 2017: “When I first became interested in dental nursing I approached Smile Together for some work experience and they very kindly invited me to observe their clinical team in action. After spending a few days in the clinics I was so inspired by the Smile Together team that when I saw their apprenticeship opportunities being promoted I leapt at the chance to apply and was thrilled to be offered one of the two posts. I started in December 2017 working in Newquay Community Hospital where I worked in both West Country Dental Care and Brighter Dental to gain knowledge in all areas of dentistry. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the in-house mentoring that I received from the dental nurses and dentists who were so supportive. Thai and I were the first dental nurse apprentices for Smile Together and worked together to achieve our qualifications, studying, revising and helping each other throughout the course. We were both very excited to be offered full-time dental nurse positions upon completion of our qualification and have remained working in the company ever since.”
