Delivered by Smile Together in partnership with The Fishermen’s Mission, Seafarers Hospital Society and Healthy Cornwall, funded by Seafarers UK as part of the national SeaFit Programme

We teamed up to offer fishermen and their dependent family members:

• A free check-up

• Immediate dental treatment

• Oral cancer screening

• Subsidised further treatment with Brighter Dental as recommended by our West Country Dental Care dentist on the day

In a mobile dental unit loaned from our good friends CDS in Bedfordshire we visited nine fishing ports in three weeks – from Newlyn and Hayle in West Cornwall to Brixham and Ilfracombe in Devon. In some locations there were also free NHS health checks available from partners including Healthy Cornwall, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK, Seafarers Physio Network, Fairwinds, OneYou Plymouth, SAIL and Compass House GP.

We linked up with our Brighter Smiles oral health team, taking the mobile dental unit further into our community and visiting Newlyn and Bodriggy Primary Schools and our new dental centre at Harleigh Road in Bodmin – an opportunity for local children, their families and other members of the community to pop along to see what we’re doing, have a look inside the dental unit and generally learn more about dental care.

Every eligible person who saw our dentist was entered into a free prize draw and we also encouraged people to bring along their old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and packaging so we could take these away for recycling through the Colgate TerraCycle programme.

Here’s what some of our Smiles At Sea patients had to say:

“It’s given me more confidence – it’s nice to be able to smile at people without them judging you for not having any teeth!”

“This is brilliant for fishermen. It’s hard to get to the dentist – you have to wait until the boat goes in for a refit to be home. I’ve had to keep cancelling appointments”

“Brilliant, perfect, best dentist I’ve ever seen”

“This is great. I never knew there were so many agencies offering advice and assistance” … “I haven’t had my teeth checked in years and the dentists were really helpful” …  “Thank you for caring about the fishing families.”

“Given me the confidence that my teeth are ok”

“Excellent advice following a much needed check-up. Thanks!”

“Can’t tell you how great it is that you’ve been here today. I haven’t had my teeth checked in a long time. They are now much cleaner and I feel a lot better, and I now have a referral to mend my broken teeth so I am very happy.”
