Practice Manager for Penzance and Isles of Scilly

I’ve worked at Smile Together for 25 years, starting out as a trainee dental nurse when I was 20. As Practice Manager, I oversee the day-to-day running of both Penzance and our remote clinic on the Isles of Scilly. That includes managing the rota, making sure all staff are in place, and that we have the right equipment and stock available – and that everything’s working and properly serviced.

It’s a busy role, and if we’re short on staff, I’ll often step in and support the team clinically, which keeps me close to the work I’ve always loved. My aim is to make sure everything runs smoothly so that our teams can focus on delivering the best possible care to our patients.

The best part of my role is the team I work with – they’re brilliant. We’re all committed to delivering great care, and it’s inspiring to see what we achieve together through collaboration and teamwork. I also really enjoy thinking about how we can improve the patient journey and make it a positive experience for everyone who comes through our doors.

The biggest challenge is how busy we are – there are never quite enough hours in the day! Managing a remote clinic like the Isles of Scilly also brings its own logistical challenges. But I enjoy the variety and the chance to problem-solve – every day is different.

I was drawn to dental nursing because I wanted a job where I could care for people and make a difference. I began in urgent care and soon realised that special care dentistry was where I wanted to be. I spent many years supporting patients with additional needs, and completed several qualifications in special care.

Over time, I progressed into my current role as Practice Manager. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to take on new challenges and help shape the working environment for our teams. I believe that by supporting our staff and encouraging teamwork, we also improve the experience for our patients – and that’s what it’s all about.

What inspires me most about Smile Together is the people. Everyone here genuinely cares – about their patients, their colleagues, and the wider community. We’re all working towards the same goal, and that creates a really positive, supportive culture.

To anyone thinking of working here, I’d say: it’s a chance to be part of an amazing team, where we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to do things. There’s lots of opportunity to develop and grow, and to be part of something that really makes a difference.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and getting stuck into a good book – it’s the perfect way to unwind.
