Laura Davis
Practice Manager for our practice in Penzance
As the Practice Manager in Penzance my first task of the day is a team meeting, or ‘huddle’, this is a short catch up to check in with the team and allows us to address any new challenges. The wellbeing of the team is paramount so regular 1-1’s, catch ups and lunchtime get togethers are so important – as well as keeping the emergency stash of chocolate topped up in the fridge! I am responsible for ensuring all clinical, legal and health and safety requirements are adhered to, including CQC compliance. I also oversee waitlists as well as training and performance evaluations for the team and practice. I learn something new every day!
The most fun aspect of my role is being part of such an amazing team, both in Penzance and throughout Smile Together as a whole. I really do look forward to coming to work to see them all. Despite the challenge of not having a dentistry background, my team has been incredibly helpful and supportive. I am constantly inspired by their commitment to ensuring the best possible experience for our patients.
Before joining Smile Together I worked for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service for 14 years in a Support Role and ending my time with them as PA to Deputy Chief Fire Officer. Part of my role with the Fire Service was to provide support to the HR team which I thoroughly enjoyed so studied and obtained CiPD. I then took a job within the HR department at Cornwall Council as a Senior Co-ordinator. After a restructure within the department, I applied to become the Practice Manager of Occupational Health (OH) and was successful. I worked in this position for over 4 years and my experience within OH gave me the confidence to apply for my current role at Smile Together.
I wanted to join Smile Together because they were an employee-owned company with a committed, engaged and friendly values-based team. The company offers excellent career progression and opportunities to develop into other areas of expertise. I love the shared ethos for community, social and environmental impact. They are the first dental practice in the UK to achieve B Corporation certification, and as a social enterprise, they reinvest profits into improving patient facilities, communities, and the environment.
To anyone considering working for Smile Together, I would say they are a truly amazing company to work for and they have the best team! It is so rewarding making a difference to those in need in our community and helping patients. As an employee-owned organisation, your voice is valued and encouraged. If you are looking for a fulfilling career where you can make a meaningful difference, Smile Together could be the perfect fit for you!
Outside of work I enjoy spending time in the fresh air whether that’s in the garden, walking on the beach or in the woods. I love spending time with my family and friends.
