Formerly our receptionist in Newquay, I was inspired to progress my career as a dental nurse and was thrilled to successfully secure a trainee dental nurse position in 2022, still based in Newquay.

Being a receptionist was a wonderful way to start my career in dentistry – I developed a great understanding of our company, our patients and Practice Management System, and even some knowledge around dental terminology. I’ve felt comfortable and confident making the transition to dental nursing, very quickly going solo with the dentist.

I absolutely love being able to support our patients with hands-on dental care, seeing them overcome their anxieties and ultimately have a nice time at the dentist! I’m also on hand to support our receptionist and help in managing often complex clinical diaries.

As dental nurse trainees we are extremely well supported by the whole Smile Together team, both in the surgery environment and with our learning. We are also actively encouraged to engage in the social and environmental impact initiatives that Smile Together delivers in local communities, and I’ve especially enjoyed supporting our Smiles at Sea harbourside tour providing treatment to fishermen and Health for Homeless pop ups in Newquay.

As a shareholder in our employee-owned business I was one of six colleagues chosen to represent Smile Together at the national Employee Ownership Association conference in Liverpool in October 2022, and this not only sparked my interest in how we can grow as an employee-owned business but inspired me to stand for election to our Shareholder Impact Board.

I’m so proud to represent my colleagues as a SIB representative whilst gaining a deeper understanding of our business, the challenges we face and opportunities available, and playing a part in the decision-making process.

To anyone thinking of joining Smile Together, it was one of the best things that could have happened to me. Not only does the company provide rewarding careers for local people but every day we make a real difference to others. I’m so proud to work here.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my young family and making the most of what Cornwall has to offer.
