Gemma Pilkington
Dental Receptionist & SIB Rep
As Dental Receptionist at our practice in Penzance, I manage appointments and respond to patient enquiries for both Penzance and the Isles of Scilly – in person, over the phone, and via email. I also ensure all the relevant paperwork is completed and that payments are taken.
The most enjoyable part of my role is working with the fabulous Penzance team. They’re incredibly kind, supportive, fun to work with, and truly passionate about their patients. I also love the conversations I have with patients, and any opportunity to be creative, like putting together our children’s corner.
One of the biggest challenges is not always being able to give patients the answers they want, which can be tough. I always try to approach these moments with empathy and ensure patients feel listened to and supported, even if we can’t immediately provide a solution.
Before joining Smile Together, I was a primary school teacher. After qualifying, I worked as a supply teacher before securing a permanent role at an amazing primary school where I taught Key Stage 1 for 14 years. Leaving teaching was a very difficult decision. I was incredibly lucky to work with amazing teachers, support staff, and families with THE best children. But after a personally challenging couple of years, it felt like the right time to step back, reflect, and, being a child at heart, think about what I want to be when I grow up! When I started on this new journey, I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I knew I wanted to help people. As soon as I saw the vacancy and learned more about Smile Together, it felt like it was meant to be.
What inspires me most about working here are the people – their values, commitment, and passion. I’m especially inspired by the impact they have on communities, and of course, the outreach work with schools (once a teacher, always a teacher 😉).
To anyone considering working for Smile Together, I’d say: go for it. Whatever your background, there may just be a place for you!
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, swimming in the sea, and dancing, even if it’s just around the dining room table these days. I also enjoy walking and am a reluctant runner, but in 2023 I completed the Man vs Coast challenge with my twin sister to raise money for the Sunrise Centre at Treliske.
