Lesa Annear Smile Together Director of Finance

Lesa Annear

Finance Director

As a commercially focused Chartered Management Accountant with a track record of delivery and transformational change management in both the public and private sectors, I support our Board, leadership and finance teams in all aspects of financial management, organisational redesign, strategic project and resource planning, and performance improvement. In this capacity I am also a company director for Smile Together and Smile Together Commercial.

Prior to joining Smile Together I was Managing Director for Tamar Consultancy Ltd providing professional support to organisations motivated to transform, improve performance and deliver sustainable outcomes, and before that I was Strategic Director for Transformation and Change for Plymouth City Council, reporting to the Chief Executive and leading a directorate of c.1000 employees with responsibility for Corporate Services comprising: Finance, Human Resources, IT, Libraries, Legal Services, delivery of full transformation portfolio of projects and Customer Services. I was also Strategic Director for the Council’s Complete Transformation Programme of organisational redesign, digital, commercialisation and shared service operation, and part of the leadership team integrating Health and Care provision in the region. I was chair of the Commercial Enterprise Board and a corporate shareholder and trustee of Delt Shared Services Limited, and was on the Eduserve Local Government Executive Programme Steering Group, advising Government on how to invest in digital projects within local government and health sectors to maximum benefit.

A graduate of Middlesex University with a degree in European Business Administration (with French) I joined Aggregate Industries UK on their Graduate Management Accountancy Programme and upon qualifying joined Ultra Electronics, progressing to Chief Accountant over a 6 year period. I worked on their Management Buy Out from Dowty Group Plc and positively thrived on this first experience in change management. I therefore joined Serco as Projects Director then spent 12 years with EDF Energy, ultimately progressing to Head of Capability, Performance and Business Transformation. EDF generously sponsored my accelerated MBA with Cranfield University School of Management and during my time with Plymouth City Council I became a Common Purpose Graduate designed ‘for developing leaders who can cross boundaries’. I especially enjoyed this experience alongside other leaders from the public, private and third sectors.

Smile Together might be a smaller organisation than others I’ve worked in but it’s a genuinely inspirational and innovative environment, with an extraordinary team of people driven to improve long term health outcomes for local people. Not only are we dedicated to delivering excellent patient care and improving frontline facilities but, as an employee-owned social enterprise, we’re applying that passion and commitment to reach even further into our communities. It’s a complex world that we operate within but the opportunities to make a sustainable change are truly motivational – it’s my responsibility to ensure we have a robust and resilient financial foundation to continue and develop our important work.

My role is 3 days per week which leaves me time to help my husband put the finishing touches to our new home-build, and I also enjoy spending time with my family, keeping active and travelling, particularly walking and skiing. I’m also an active volunteer with Alzheimer’s Research and City College Plymouth where I support student employability, particularly on a one-to-one basis, honing job application and interview preparations.
