An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Orthodontist at Smile Together Dental CIC, working within our West Country Dental Care team.

Reporting to the Clinical Director, this position will suit someone who is able to cope with the demands of the public for orthodontic services and the changes that occur as our company evolves. Responsibilities will include working with the clinic nurse on a day-to-day basis, orthodontic treatment of referred patients thought suitable to receive treatment in primary care, and onward referral of appropriate patients to hospital services.

Role summary:

To work within West Country Dental Care in providing an orthodontic service to the population of North and Central Cornwall.

The post holder’s responsibilities will include:

  • Orthodontic examination of patients referred by General Dental Practitioners from the locality served by the post holder
  • Orthodontic treatment of referred patients thought suitable to receive treatment in primary care
  • Onward referral of appropriate patients to hospital services or to other providers of orthodontic services
  • Actively engaging with Smile Together teams and participating in audit activities, planning and development sessions, and in-house meetings etc
  • Being responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance and legislation, appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and reporting accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure

  • Undertaking other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director and Smile Together Management Team

Key accountabilities:

  • Working with the clinic nurse on a day-to-day basis
  • Assessing and treating target numbers of patients
  • Coping with ongoing organisational change
  • Working with and commitment to the team under the direction of the Clinical Director
  • Engaging with other members of the health community both in Cornwall and elsewhere
  • Relating to other parties with an interest in the work of Smile Together
  • Good communication skills with the public and colleagues
  • Maintaining excellent clinical record keeping
  • Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our Smile Together Training Academy
  • Working alongside clinical and professional support colleagues in facilitating ongoing organisational change and development

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check.

 Knowledge, Education, Training and Skills:

  • Have good general dental experience
  • Have experience in all aspects of orthodontics
  • Have a higher dental qualification appropriate to the specialist role
  • Have leadership and administrative competencies
  • Have full registration and specialist registration with the GDC
  • Have the ability and knowledge to assess patients’ needs and to make appropriate treatment decisions (treatment plan)
  • Have the ability to plan orthodontic services in liaison with colleagues
  • Have good time management skills
  • Have a current full driving licence
  • Have occupational health clearance
  • Have knowledge of the Data Protection Act/General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and NHS Confidentiality Guidelines (e.g. Caldicott) and their implications
  • Be able to work effectively under pressure
  • Be IT literate
  • Be assertive
  • Be competent in dealing with patients who need urgent dental care of an orthodontic nature
  • Respect the requirement for patient confidentiality

 Working conditions:

  • It is expected that the post holder will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations and will be willing to receive appropriate ongoing training and professional/personal development
  • The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries
  • There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage
  • Patients or their carers and companions may on occasion challenge staff with inappropriate behaviour. This may be aggressive and abusive. This will place emotional demands on the post holder who should be aware that this might be part of working life. Smile Together will support the post holder in such circumstances
