This has got to be one of the most unique Dentist roles in the country.

This exciting opportunity to join Brighter Dental, part of Smile Together Dental CIC, is due to the retirement of our current dentist on the Isles of Scilly. Reporting to our Clinical Director this position will suit someone who has significant experience, dedication and flexibility alongside the commitment to become an integral part of a close knit community. Responsibilities will include providing a ‘safety net’ NHS dental service to the population of the Isles of Scilly and visitors to the islands. More specifically:

  • Encouragement and provision of regular dental care for adults and children resident on the islands
  • Provision of emergency dental care for the residents of and visitors to the islands
  • Enhancing oral health of the island population with particular emphasis on child dental health
  • Responsibility for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity
  • Active participation as part of the Brighter Dental team in wider Smile Together company activities
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director

The post holder’s responsibilities will include:

  • Encouragement and provision of regular dental care for adults and children resident on the islands, treating a target number of patients
  • Provision of emergency dental care for the residents of and visitors to the islands, ensuring all patients presenting with a dental emergency receive advice and treatment as appropriate within 24 hours of contact either direct or via our Call Centre
  • Minimising mainland referrals for specialist or generalist dental services
  • Enhancing the oral health of the island population with particular emphasis on child dental health
  • Participation in appropriate community dental and oral health promotion activities and epidemiology studies – for example, see more about our oral health campaign at brightersmiles.org.uk and our Smiles at Sea initiative at https://smiletogether.co.uk/smilesatsea/
  • Being responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity, ensuring compliance with clinical governance and legislation, appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and reporting accidents, incidents and near misses using the Smile Together incident reporting procedure
  • Working as part of the whole dental team in the provision and delivery of dental care services to patients and complimentary working with other health professionals on the islands and in Cornwall
  • Ensuring that all activities undertaken at the practice are in line with GDC guidelines and company policies and procedures
  • Active engagement with wider Smile Together team activities, participation in audit activities, planning and development sessions, and in-house meetings etc
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director, Dental Director and Smile Together Management Team

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Considerable knowledge and experience of clinical governance and audits
  • Experience of a wide range of dental procedures acquired through training and clinical experience
  • Excellent IT skills (we use the Dentally Practice Management System)
  • Willingness and flexibility to engage with patients across a range of communication channels including social media
  • Trained to recognise and respond to medical emergencies (ie. Immediate Life Support techniques)
  • Securing cross infection procedures and standards current at any time
  • Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our Smile Together Training Academy
  • Working alongside clinical and professional support colleagues in facilitating on-going organisational change and development
  • Be flexible with duties to ensure the smooth running of the practice and take ownership of tasks to ensure these are completed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our Smile Together Training Academy
  • Working alongside clinical and professional support colleagues in facilitating on-going organisational change and development
  • Working in our Brighter Dental practice in St Mary’s Hospital on the Isles of Scilly

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date.

All interview and appointment expenses will be covered including travel and DBS check.

 

Knowledge, Education, Training and Skills:

  • Experience in all aspects of general dental practice
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council
  • Competency in dealing with patients who need urgent/emergency dental care
  • Experience and competency in oral surgery and ideally possess higher qualification(s)
  • Ideally have experience in treating patients with sedation
  • Leadership experience and administrative competencies
  • Knowledge of the General Data Protection Regulation and its Implications, and the need for confidentiality
  • Competency in the use of IT
  • Knowledge and acceptance of NHS Policies
  • Ability to provide mentorship to junior colleagues and locums when appropriate

Working conditions:

  • It is expected that the post holder will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations and will be willing to receive appropriate on-going training and professional/personal development
  • There may be weekend working and the expectation is that the Dentist remains on the island unless for planned leave
  • The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
  • The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries
  • There may be occasions when travel to work in other locations or for team meetings will be required, with paid travel from/to St Mary’s

  • There are about 200 General Dental Practitioners in Cornwall - you would be the sole provider on the Isles of Scilly
